After much thought, I have decided that it is about passion. Passion plays a role in whatever we do on a daily basis. Whether it is the job that we do or our best efforts at being an entrepreneur – without passion, we would not be inclined to pursue our interests. My passion is gardens, gardening, reading about gardening, learning more about gardening, writing about gardens and cultivating friendships with others who have a passion for all things garden. In my pursuit of sharing this garden awareness, I became a member of The Garden Writers Association, now known as The Association for Garden Communicators.
The helpful, friendly and accepting spirit that I felt from the moment I began registering for this year’s conference in Atlanta, Georgia from The Kellen Group was awesome. No matter the question, no matter how many times I had issues (from my end) on finding information on the GWA website – they were always there. Even at the conference, my GWA Angel was always patient and had an answer or resolution….Thank you for unlocking my cell phone from the charging station….whew!
Since becoming a member, I can always count on Tribe Leader Kirk Brown also known as John Bartram to add excitement and enthusiasm. Kirk Brown was welcoming when I first met him at MANTS and his support has never wavered!!! Thank You Kirk Brown!!!Whether it is weighing in on a conversation on Facebook or on the GWA website – I look to his positive spirit and welcoming voice that always lets me know that I have found my tribe. A tribe can be defined as a group of people who have similar values or interests – like horticulture.
Oh, what a great tribe this group is!!! From meeting other new members….
to catching up with friends I have admired and made along the way
to finally meeting those who have helped you along the way…
to visiting gorgeous gardens and getting caught in the rain…

to selfies with the horticultural celebrities…

It was all enjoyed and well worth it especially when there was another DC local newbie there as well!!!
Did I mention the after party??? TRUST ME IT WAS TERRIFIC!!!
GWA is worth joining and being an active participant. If you are a garden communicator, I urge you to consider joining this tribe of passionate garden-minded people. I assure you it is a beautiful thing when gatherings are held, ideas are shared and you know that you are in the company of positive people.
