Every garden story has a beginning. Sometimes it could be an annual gathering of words or a perennial offering of wisdom to be remembered along one’s garden journey. Sometimes it is the silence of the writer when the world moves too fast and beauty in the garden is fleeting.
At Cottage in the Court, Teri Speight finds the beauty of the garden. Forming garden conversations, discovering resilient plants and people, Cottage in the Court is her place to share the beauty that surrounds us. Whether you seek a speaker to inspire, to reflect on the gifts of nature, or to share knowledge on a specific topic, allow Teri to engage in your garden community.

Teri Speight, Author, Speaker, Freelance Writer, is the author of Black Flora, Inspiring Profiles of Floriculture’s New Vanguard (Timber Press). She is also the co-author of The Urban Garden: 101 Ways to Grow Food and Beauty in the City (Quarto). Her words have been quoted in the NY Times, Martha Stewart, the Washington Post, and other well-known publications.
From childhood, Teri has always had her hands in the soil of Washington, DC, and beyond. The garden is where Teri finds healing, calm in difficult times, and peace. Her goal is to share the love of gardening and reconnect others to the soil. African Americans have had quite the journey, embracing the earth from the familiar to the unfamiliar soils of a new land. Over time, we have learned to use our genetic remembrance to cultivate new ways to incorporate culture in our gardens.
