Beauty in Asbury Park, New Jersey……I never thought about it really. I simply considered New Jersey to just be New Jersey….educational institutions of note, beaches and not exactly on my bucket list…except for the gardens. I purchased a great book last year on Gardens of New Jersey…and have a Fantabulous life mentor, Patricia Patton resides here. Patricia Patton is about to hold the second annual Dream Yourself Awake Retreat, that promises to wake up the inner YOU!!
I misjudged New Jersey – it simply was not the typical beach town I was familiar with. From the just too cute cottages with a certain Victorian flare to the bodacious cottage gardens filled with Hydrangea and familiar perennials…oh what a gorgeous place to relax!
We drove from Asbury Park to Avon by the Sea and beyond, enjoying the night air and people watching. Of course, I was in awe of the beautiful gardens and seeing the inhabitants enjoying being outdoors. Tallulah’s, a wonderful restaurant in Asbury Park provided us with a meal that was fresh, unique and most importantly delicious. We shared local greens as a house salad and had to make a selection from the extensive pizza menu. A drink that caught my eye was ginger and jam……yes that is a berried jam that you mix in with the drink…sounded different – but it was delicious!!
There were other selections like homemade meatballs and of course – dessert! We chose a pizza made with Spicy Soprasetta, local honey and homemade sauce with sourdough made from a family recipe transported here from California. Uniquely AWESOME!!!
Dessert was enjoyed at Beach Plum, an ice cream parlor that Patricia Patton assured me was some of the best ice cream in Asbury Park!!! The other patrons in the shop were oh so kind and inquired what our selections were and shared theirs as well!! Kids juggling huge cones of deliciousness as well as their bikes, as parents paused to make certain all was okay. By the way – that was a delicious serving of ice cream!!! Such small town spirit, genuine caring, and sincere hospitality!!! I simply adore small towns and all they have to offer!!
This sign I saw as we visited downtown Asbury Park says it all…….beauty found in so many things at a beach town in New Jersey…….a wonderful thing!
